Martin Luther Community,
It is with deep gratitude and warm wishes that we announce the retirement of Coach Paul Wollersheim from his role as Boys Head Varsity Basketball Coach at Martin Luther High School.
After an incredible career spanning decades, and the last ten years shaping the lives of student-athletes at Martin Luther, Coach Wollersheim has decided to step away from the sidelines of varsity basketball. His influence on and off the court has left a lasting mark on our school and the broader Wisconsin basketball community.
Coach Wollersheim began coaching in grade schools at just 18 years old and went on to build an exceptional high school coaching career. His records speak to this:
- Overall Record: 517–158
- Dominican High School (17 years): 352–66, 12 conference titles, 6 state championships
- Martin Luther High School (10 years): 165–92, 2 conference titles, 1 state championship (2019)
- Honors: 2005 Wisconsin State Coach of the Year, 2010 Dominican Athletic Hall of Fame, 2020 WBCA Hall of Fame
Beyond the accolades, it’s the relationships Coach Wollersheim formed with his players, fellow coaches, and the Martin Luther community that he values most.
"The Lutheran community that I’ve been a part of at Martin Luther has been life-altering for me in my faith journey and relationship with Jesus," he shared. "I will be forever thankful for the gift of faith I’ve received here."
Athletic Director Corey Scheel reflected on the impact Coach Wollersheim has made over the past decade:
“Coach Wollersheim has been the heart of the Martin Luther boys’ basketball program, leading with integrity and passion, while putting it on the map as one of the top programs in the Metro Classic Conference and in southeast Wisconsin. He poured into his players, led with a Christ-centered heart, and developed a culture of hard work, discipline, and faith. He leaves a legacy that will continue to inspire those who follow him. I am thankful for his friendship and mentorship, and grateful that he will continue to be involved in the Jr. Spartan boys basketball program—helping to set up the high school program for a positive and bright future.”
While stepping away from varsity coaching, Coach Wollersheim isn’t leaving the gym entirely. He will continue in his role as Dean of Students, stay involved with the Jr. Spartan basketball program, and coach his sixth-grade son’s team. He also looks forward to spending more time with his family.
Please join us in thanking Coach Wollersheim for his faithful leadership, inspiring mentorship, and commitment to excellence. The student-athletes he’s impacted and the strong foundation he built at Martin Luther will keep his legacy alive for years to come.
With appreciation,
Martin Luther High School Administration
